What appears as a whimsical dance of insects across sheet music is, in fact, a frantic struggle for survival.
Set to Beethoven’s powerful score, their movement turns to a desperate flight, with insects vanishing one by one—a vivid metaphor for mass extinction and ecological collapse.

3D workflow
The process began with making a real puppet before moving on to the 3D work. I imagined the musical score stretched out like a spiderweb, so I used hot glue as my primary material to bring that concept to life.
The animation is performed to a rearranged version of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, 3rd movement.
Working without a traditional storyboard, I adopted an intuitive approach to collaborate with the music composer. I sketched directly onto the sheet music to guide their imagination— asking,
“Doesn't this melody feel like a butterfly fluttering by? And right here, doesn't it sound like a bird pecking at its food?”
Grease Pencil tool in Blender was utilized to create materials with a unique shader that mimics the appearance of clay. It is incredibly rewarding when audiences mistake the animation for stop-motion, as it means my physical craft sensibility and CG techniques blended together seamlessly!

That’s how I inspired the insect designs by the shapes of musical notes on actual sheet. I considered each insect’s appearance and physical traits, ensuring harmony between their design and movements.
