TJ Watson |The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Upcycling Art

Since marine debris is the subject matter, real garbage and recyclables are used to make the set and props, matching the theme of the work. By doing so, the whole production is well-aligned with the concept of the film.

Every try was a first time, which formed a sense of desperation. I began with no instructions, conditions, or resources to make it. I had to build multiple huge stop-motion sets; sure, I had no money, so I even collected trash from dumpsites. When I realized that the silicone puppets I spent a few weeks making without sleep were completely unusable, I wanted to give it all up...

But what kept me going was always people. There were a few peers who helped me shoot for 3 days straight without any sleep. Another friend secretly took craft materials from her school and brought them to me. 10 more friends came together at tiny recording room when I needed voice actors. Film school peers let me borrow their cameras and lighting gears, and helped set up.

I feel like the friends who helped me back then are true soulmates I will keep for the rest of my life.

I even put my school on hold for this, and working 6 straight months without a single day off landed me in the hospital with a herniated disc. 🤕 I eventually completed 20 minutes of full stop-motion animation!

So, after going through something that pushed me to my limits, I knew right then.

“this is how I’m going to make animations for the rest of my life!”

Soon, I realized that animation is a powerful medium for connecting with people.

I have a deep respect for nature and animals. How life on Earth came to exist is wonderful, but losing them makes me very sad. I want to share this admiration with audience

Animation works like a gift: it is friendly, joyful, and naturally touches people's hearts in ways words alone cannot.

Since 2021, this piece has brought me so much. It was shown at film festivals and educational institutions, environmental campaigns and even national TV!!
It also gave me chances to be stand before audience for interviews, and I was able to exhibit the actual set at exhibitions. It even helped me get my first job.

So <Isle of Trash, 2021>, this piece is the beginning of everything.
